Mavis Fischer is getting married. She has yet to meet her intended face to face and doesn't know him save a single phone call and a few photographs. She might be crazy, but for reasons that go far beyond a conventional pursuit.

Grady Webster is an independently wealthy marketer, and host of a seasonal duck hunting club. He approaches his decision to marry the same way he does business. After doing research, weighing pros and cons, he writes to Mavis Fischer upon a hunting guide’s recommendation, her stepbrother.

I drank my coffee, thankful to be on their good side.

Conventional pursuit

She treated the whole thing as a business deal.

An arranged marriage:
I was good with business. My decision to marry was no different. I’d weighed pros and cons, invested, and studied the venture before deciding on marriage.

Then there was the matter of how to choose a wife.

I’d known Tristian for five years. When I told him I was looking to get married, he mentioned Mavis and encouraged me to write to her. From the affectionate way he talked about her, I knew they were close.

It was early yet, but it seemed my investment was paying off.

Like me, she’d done her research.

She approached the whole thing as a business deal, even down to last night. That was fine.

I was used to business.
